At the same time, while the Indians were resisting the encroachment of the whites, struggling against displacement, striving for survival, they were mastering their own domestic crafts. They evolved new techniques in basketry. They perfected the coil method (unknown in the Old World) in pottery making.

There are similarities between Tanoan, spoken in the pueblos of New Mexico, and the Aztecan languages of Old Mexico. And Tewa, a Tanoan tongue, is spoken at Hano in the Hopi country, where the Hopis generally speak Shoshonean. Few Indian languages have been translated phonetically and recorded. For the most part the languages have been handed down orally from generation to generation. Indian writing was limited to pictographs, some on skins, some on birch-bark, some carved on wood or stone, some painted in sand.

The Siouan tribes were distributed from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. One group lived in Virginia, and North and South Page 7 Carolina, and a splinter group lived in southern Mississippi. The main group of Sioux lived in the valley of the Missouri River. Another group lived in eastern Montana and in scattered regions from Saskatchewan southeast into Arkansas. Another group was situated in Wisconsin, around Winnebago and Green Bay. As a result of wide distribution three basic Sioux dialects evolved.
