D. in economics from the University of Chicago in 1905 (the second woman to do so), Edith Abbott built a successful academic career for herself, first, as a labour economist and economic historian and, later, as Professor and Dean of the University of Chicago Graduate School of Social Service Administration and as long-time editor of the Social Service Review. Abbott was born in Nebraska in 1876 to the small-town prairie lawyer, Othman Abbott, and his wife, Elizabeth Griffin. Both believed in equal rights for women and in education for their daughters, Grace and Edith.

Commons. In this work, Allen investigated the role of farm women’s labour in the production of cotton and its implications for the price of cotton and the living standards of cotton-farming families. Allen’s method of inquiry was a survey of women in farm households in Texas. She designed the questionnaire herself and conducted the majority of the interviews personally; this allowed Allen to compile not just impersonal data, but also her own observations and reactions to the women she met and to the conditions of their lives and work.

Emily Greene Balch (1867–1961) Emily Greene Balch, co-winner of the 1946 Nobel Peace Prize, was born in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, on 8 January 1867, the second of six surviving children of Francis Vergnies Balch, a lawyer who had been secretary to the abolitionist Senator Charles Sumner, and of Ellen Maria Noyes Balch, a former schoolteacher. Emily entered Bryn Mawr College in 1886, earning her AB in 1889 with Bryn Mawr’s first graduating class. As the first winner of the Bryn Mawr Fellowship for European Study, she spent 1890–91 at the Sorbonne, researching her monograph on Public Assistance of the Poor in France, which was published by the American Economic Association in 1893.
