" On its thirteen-mile run from the Red River to Sherman, the Butterfield route traversed the future site of Denison (1872), crossed Duck Creek on a new bridge, passed by the already-famous Sand Springs with its Inscription Rock, and possibly paused at Cooke Springs.

Finally, when the Butterfield locating team came to Sherman, they (along with Colbert) invited the officials to join them in what legend has termed "a sumptuous champagne dinner" which, incidentally, lead to an amusing local episode. John Butterfield himself is said to have been the major guest- although most authorities say that Butterfield never traveled west of Fort Smith. The flowing wine created an air of good fellowship, but led to an argument among the Shermanites as to whether or not an old gray duck-some say goose-had built a nest under the courthouse.
