The sense of being is always present there. You could ride on yourself and complete the accomplishment of experiencing proper being, total being. And then as you go along beyond that, you can ride on yourself, and play a flute as you ride on yourself. of well- being is so solid, so definite, you can even extend greater awareness of not only the sense of being body, but the sense of well- being of livelihood and so forth. Which comes to the second stage of mindfulness, of the livelihood. I think we should stop there today.

Within that basic introduction, of power in the truth, is the turning of the wheel of the dharma, Dharmachakra. The eight types of consciousness we discussed yesterday are the working base, on which we work on the practice of meditation simply by not exaggerating the levels of these different consciousnesses or disrespecting them. So there is a sense of balance, some sense of respect. When a person sits and meditates, it is a special situation; it is a sacred act of some kind. It has been said by Petrul Rinpoche that even if you have impure thoughts in the meditation hall, those thoughts are regarded as sacred thoughts.

Awareness of breathing is more accentuated if there is an itch in your back or if there is self-consciousness of your foot, or if there is a hole in your socks while you walk. All of those little 44 self- consciousness es are a reminder of the general rhythm that goes on with the body. So the whole thing is trying to cooperate one's whole basic being and concentrating on the technique of awareness of ·breathing. There are several levels of mindfulness one can achieve. It is like the images shown in the oxherding pictures of Zen tradition: First, there is a sense of watching yours elf.
